The main feature of short stories is to present many ideas through brief descriptions. There is no description of any unnecessary topics when presenting various themes.

In short, it is more important to describe what a character is doing than to describe the ring or dress of that character.

Again, it is more significant to describe how a character does his main task in the morning than to describe how he brushes his teeth.

The description of such unnecessary topics may apply to a large novel, but it can never apply to short stories.

It is not that in short stories, theoretical issues, orders, advice, theories, etc., will not be present at all. There may be short stories that include theory, but it is better to focus on the narrative.

The essence of short stories is to summarize various topics, which is mainly achieved through concise storytelling.

Short story readers are typically busy people who are reluctant to engage with the unnecessary topics found in large novels. However, through short stories, they can easily read and understand many societal themes.

The subject of short stories is not limited to people's lives, social systems, and reality; it also encompasses unrealistic, highly imaginative, and fantasy-based topics.

However, the key to the story is more important than the narrative of unnecessary topics.

ছোটগল্পের প্রধান বৈশিষ্ট্যই হচ্ছে, অল্প বর্ণনার মাধ্যমে অনেক বিষয় উপস্থাপন করা। অনেক বিষয় উপস্থাপন করার সময় তাতে কোন ধরনের অপ্রয়োজনীয় বিষয়ের বর্ণনা না থাকা।

ছোটগল্পে, কোনো চরিত্রের হাতের আংটি অথবা পোষাকের বর্ণনা দেয়ার চেয়ে সে কী কাজ করতেছে, সেটার বর্ণনা দেয়া বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

আবার, কোন চরিত্র সকালবেলা ঘুম থেকে উঠে কীভাবে দাঁত ব্রাশ করতেছে, সেটার বর্ণনা দেয়ার চেয়ে সকালবেলা ঘুম থেকে উঠে গল্পের মূল কাহিনিতে সক্রিয় হয়েছে, সেটার বর্ণনা দেয়া বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

এরকম অপ্রয়োজনীয় বিষয়ের বর্ণনা হয়তো বৃহৎ উপন্যাসের ক্ষেত্রে প্রযোজ্য হতে পারে, কিন্তু সেটা কখনই ছোটগল্পের ক্ষেত্রে প্রযোজ্য হতে পারেনা।

আবার ছোটগল্পে, তাত্ত্বিক বিষয়, আদেশ, উপদেশ, তত্ত্বকথা প্রভৃতি একেবারেই থাকবেনা বিষয়টা এরকম না। ছোটগল্পে তত্ত্বকথা থাকতেই পারে। বরং তত্ত্বকথা থাকলে বিষয়টা আরো ভালো হয়।

মূলত ছোটগল্পের মাধ্যমে ঘটে যাওয়া বিভিন্ন বিষয় সংক্ষেপে উপস্থাপন করাই হচ্ছে ছোটগল্পের সার্থকতা।

ছোটগল্পের রিডার মূলত ব্যস্ত মানুষেরা, যাঁরা বৃহৎ উপন্যাসের অপ্রয়োজনীয় বিষয় পড়তে অনাগ্ৰহী। কিন্তু ছোটগল্পের মাধ্যমে সমাজ ও বাস্তবতার অনেক বিষয় সহজেই পড়তে পারেন এবং বুঝতে পারেন।

ছোটগল্পের বিষয় শুধু মানুষের জীবন, সমাজ ব্যবস্থা ও বাস্তবতার মধ্যেই সীমাবদ্ধ থাকেনা, বরং অবাস্তব, অতি কাল্পনিক ও ফ্যান্টাসি নির্ভর বিষয়ের মাধ্যমেও ছোটগল্প রচিত হতে পারে।

কিন্তু তাতেও অপ্রয়োজনীয় বিষয়ের বর্ণনার চেয়ে গল্পের মূল বিষয়ই বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

মূলত এটাই হচ্ছে ছোটগল্পের সার্থকতা।
