গডফাদার বলতে উদার ও নিষ্ঠাবান ব্যক্তিদেরকে বুঝান হতো।
কিন্তু মারিও পুজো অপরাধী নেতাদেরকে গডফাদার হিসেবে উপস্থাপন করেছিলেন তিনির উপন্যাসে।
ভিটো, টেসিও আর ক্লেমেঞ্জা যৌবনে চুরি, ডাকাতি, খুন, অবৈধ মাদক ব্যবসা, প্রতারণার মাধ্যমে অন্যের টাকা ও সম্পদ আত্মসাৎ করা, অবৈধ জুয়া পরিচালনাসহ যত ধরণের অপরাধ আছে প্রায় সকল কিছু করে সমাজ ও রাজনীতির নিয়ন্ত্রক হয়েছে প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক শিক্ষা ছাড়াই। আর প্রৌঢ় বয়সে হয়েছে অপরাধের পৃষ্ঠপোষক।
এরাই আবার নিজেদের আদালত বসিয়ে মানুষের বিচার করে।
এদের সহযোগী সান্তিনিয়ো, মাইকেল, রকো ল্যাম্পোনি, পেশাদার খুনি লুকা ব্রাসি, আলবার্ট নেরি আর অসৎ উকিল টম হেগেন।
